MIDDLE SCHOOL SIGN-UP MEETING FOR
(Pictures by Jen Babineau)
Prior to the
actual APL Presents workshop, we customarily hold what has come to be
known as the Sign-up Meeting. This is
to give the potential staff members a taste of what is to come. On top of
Mr. J. working at the board creating a character by committee,
the attendees were also encouraged to draw on their own. Below are the
results of the meeting both in pictures and art.
From the left: Crystle C., Kyle M., David O.,
Makayla M., Joshua D., Kyle P., Matt P., Jenna F.,
and Katherine G.
Sorry we didn't have a better group photo, but the pickins among those pix were
mighty slim. However, take heart.
There is another group picture two windows down.
This is Josh, Matt, and Jenna. I think we've
already started working on Guligisan here, and suggestions were running
from the audience.
The other group picture we warned you about. In this one, we've pretty
much completed the character, and the individuals
are working on their own drawings. I know for a fact that Makayla
is working on her Ninja Bear, and Katherine has
started on the revamp of Biker Squirrel already.
This is Ninja Bear, Makayla's version of our group character.
A better image of him can be seen further down.
This is Guligisan, the Bear Fly. He is a ninja assassin,
and, although much was theorized as to how his bear and snake sides
came to be, not much was speculated about his butterfly wings.
This is the redraw of Guligisan by Mike J. with detail furnished
by a little bit of reference worked, for the stuff that was
supposed to be there, but couldn't be added without an eraser-but sans the
dagger in the head.
This was a whole series of random aquatic and avian monsters by Joshua D.
We told you they were encouraged.
This is Charris by Jenna F. The drawing was much better than
this originally, but was
very, very light so didn't reproduce very well. She does have a side to
This is Food Monster by Kyle M., another version of Guligisan.
He didn't put in the dagger either.
These two were by Kyle P. On the left is Jacob, and on the
right is Zomp. They bare no resemblance to Guligisan at all.
This is Bulber, also by Kyle P., a living anthropomorphic light
bulb who can actually light up and is
evidently quite proud of the fact, announcing it to all and everyone.
This is a better image of Ninja Bear by Makayla. She added a
scar and a throwing star, but
downplayed the wings. She too avoided the head dagger. Not sure who
suggested that one.
This one is by Makayla, too. As much as she seemed to like drawing
it's odd that her main character in the book would turn out to be a duck.
This is a self portrait by Matt P. He wasn't using a mirror to do
it, but I'm pretty sure that his teeth aren't that pointy,
and checking back with the pictures above, he doesn't have quite so many.
This is called artistic license.
This last one was by E.C. We included it even though we weren't
able to include any photos of her.
That's about it. I know that more were done, but with
ten students, some of the drawings got past even his fast draw with a
