APL PRESENTS SUPER SPECIAL #2
PHOTO GALLERY

Here are the photos taken by Jennifer B. at the workshop that produced Super Special #2, which, because of technological constraints, were not included in the printed issue.  Although the book was strictly in black and white, they are presented here in color.  The pictures were taken in the Local History Room at the Auburn Public Library.

This was the last official group picture taken with everyone-and we mean everyone-included.  From left to right:  Amani, Jagger, Cameron, Jasmine, Jessica (Mr. J in the back), Nicole, Gavin (standing out of the line), Graesyn, Reece, and in front, Crystle.  The actual group photo for the book was a later table shot because this one was on the second camera.

This one is a collage of sorts of all the staff members hard at work.  From the top left:  Reece (working on his layout), Nicole (starting in on her first page), Crystle (sketching out her page), Cameron (blocking off a zillion frames for the latest exploits of Bob and Seaplant), the brother and sister team of Jagger and Amani, Graesyn (working from layouts he'd already created), Gavin (laying out his pages with E-Cat having a rematch), Jasmine (going right to work with her vampire duo), and unexpected Jessica (revamping Mia the Meek for her page).

An early table photo with only half of the total staff currently present.  Mr. J. helping Crystle decide upon what she wants to do with Spikey for her page.  Everyone else already hard at work using the various reference materials.

Three more members of the staff arrive (Jagger, Amani, and Graesyn).  They were able to attend because the Gardiner school system did an early dismissal thanks to the inclement weather, but it meant being a little late.  Over at the computer in the background is the director of the library and president of APL Press, Mamie Ney.

This was the first of many group pictures that were taken the day of the workshop.  It was two hours in and just before lunch and, mistakenly, figured we had the whole staff by then, not realizing that Jaz and Jessica would be there later.

A table shot of everyone steaming away diligently, except for Crystle who was at the light box station somewhere over behind Mr. J.

There she is, transferring Spikey's latest exploits over from her layouts to her final art page.  Remember, tracing is okay if the original drawing is yours.

A slightly blurry table shot of everyone at the left hand end of the workspace.  Gavin pausing for the camera again and Grae contemplating the latest package of Smarties.

And for fair equal time, a shot of the right end.  Amani is in post pose for a frame of Phablo's exploits, and Mr. J getting Crystle set up for doing an interior background in the Toonriver Lodge.

A close of  Cam cruising along at an incredible pace to complete his page.  Yes, that is an AC/DC lunchbox beside him.

Gavin using one of the curve templates to get the shape of one of his word balloons on his final page.

Jazzy Jasmine and an unexpected Jessica arrive and jump right in with both feet (or would that be all four where there's two of them?).  Due to circumstances beyond their control, they weren't able to attend until after the others had already come back from lunch.

Jaz and Jessica tore into their pages like old veterans at this.  Unfortunately, because of time constrains, they were only able to complete a page apiece before the printing deadline for the workshop.

Crystle, done with her page, helps Mr. J. start with the final assembly of everyone's pages.  A process that starts with making a mock-up of the book to get the page placement correct.

While Cam and Jagger and Amani finish up, Reece and Gavin check out the prizes to be given away while Mr. J and his growing crew of helpers readies to print out the next set of pages.

Jazzy Jasmine shows off her prize for being one of the first to complete her page.  This was a preliminary drawing for the issue cover signed by Mr. J.

Cam, at the end of the event, grinding down an eraser trying to eliminate the pencil lines from his inked artwork.  Don't worry.  It's all special effects.  No actual erasers were harmed during the making of this book.
